ANZAC Day: A Moment to Reflect and Remember

Wednesday 22 April, 2026

ANZAC Day, held each year on 25 April, is one of Australia’s most significant national days of remembrance. It marks the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops at Gallipoli in 1915, a moment that has come to symbolise courage, resilience and sacrifice in Australian history.

Today, ANZAC Day honours all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. It is a day grounded in reflection, respect and quiet appreciation, often beginning at dawn with commemorative services held across the country.

In Sydney, the official NSW Dawn Service takes place at the Cenotaph in Martin Place. The service begins early, at 4.20am, and draws large crowds each year. The ceremony is both moving and deeply symbolic, featuring the recitation of the Ode of Remembrance, the sounding of the Last Post, a minute’s silence, the Reveille and the laying of wreaths. Public viewing areas remain open until capacity is reached, and no tickets are required, though many arrive well in advance to secure a place.

For those who prefer a more local setting, there are also many smaller community services held across Sydney. These gatherings often feel more intimate, while still carrying the same sense of respect and meaning. Local RSL sub branches and councils typically host dawn or morning services, making it easier to participate close to home.

In the Eastern Suburbs, one well attended service is hosted by Bondi Junction Waverley RSL in partnership with Waverley Council. Held at Waverley Park on Birrell Street, the commemorative service begins at 7.45am at the memorial within the park. It offers a meaningful opportunity for locals to come together and reflect.

For those planning their day, it is important to note that Kiaora Place will be closed on Saturday 25 April in observance of ANZAC Day. There is also an additional public holiday on Monday 27 April, during which the centre will be open with amended trading hours. As hours may vary between retailers, visitors are encouraged to contact stores directly to confirm opening times.

ANZAC Day is a time to pause, reflect and acknowledge the service and sacrifice that has shaped the nation. Whether attending a large city service or a local gathering, it remains a deeply meaningful moment in the Australian calendar.
